Florida has stood out as a go-to vacation retreat for college partiers and family units for decades, but the overlap between families looking for a quiet week indulging in much-needed reset time and college students looking to maximize their week off from school isn’t often considered. When you walk through the door of your holiday rental, you want to feel at ease after a long day of driving or flying, not nervous about the pickups flying college pennants parked outside the house next door.
So how do you know you’re picking a destination that will be more family-friendly? If you’re wanting a relaxing, indulgent holiday destination, free from the hubbub and high-strung holiday-goers, look no further than Florida’s Forgotten Coast.
Within Gulf County, Florida, Cape San Blas and Port St. Joe are an elbow-shaped strip of land that embraces St. Joseph Bay. This unique, relatively undisturbed coast has become a haven for wildlife and natural beauty. Even the sea turtles choose to ‘holiday’ here; their nesting period runs from May to October. The T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is a can’t miss for birders, and the tranquil waters in the bay are the perfect place to get little ones interested in fishing and crabbing.

Port St. Joe is rich with maritime history and boasts a 19th century lighthouse and a historic downtown full of charming boutiques, book stores, and antique shops. Uncover the history of ‘St. Joseph’ at the Constitution Convention Museum State Park, where Florida’s first constitution was drafted in 1838.

A beach holiday isn’t complete without sampling some fresh-caught seafood! Scallops and crabs can be caught in the bay, shrimp and Mahi are brought off boats in the Gulf. Hunt’s on St. Joe Bay is a favorite for a reason, we think it’s some of the best seafood in Gulf County! Cone Heads is perfect for a post-swim sweet treat, and for something more upscale, White Marlin is our favorite place to cap off a perfect week at the Cape. Cape San Blas’s beaches are Gulf County’s best kept secret. Miles of clean, white-sand beaches are just waiting for you to stake your umbrella and sit back listening to the surf. No crowds no matter the season!
The fun doesn’t end after sunset. Gulf County allows beach bonfires beneath the stars. Chase ghost crabs across the sand, settle in for a s’more or two, and enjoy the unique beauty of the Atlantic Ocean at night.

If you’re wanting to wind down this Spring Break, Cape San Blas is the perfect destination for your family. See what sets the Cape away from any other Florida destination you’ve visited. Our Pink Lemonade and Sugar Shores homes are available to rent for the upcoming season. Pink Lemonade, near Port St. Joe, is perfect for small families or couples, while Sugar Shores is excellent for family reunions, friend get-togethers, or when you just want to spread out!
See you on the Cape!
